Reinstalling Windows 11 (clean install)

USB media

On another working PC, make official Windows 11 USB media. The stick will be wiped.

Back up first

Copy Documents, pictures, bookmarks, and license keys off the drive. This step is yours.

Custom install

Boot the USB, pick Custom, and only delete partitions if you mean to erase that disk.

Before you start: back up anything you can’t lose. A clean install erases the drive.

  1. On another working PC, go to Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page and get the Media Creation Tool.
  2. Insert a USB drive (8GB+, it will be wiped) and run the tool, choosing “Create installation media.”
  3. Back up your files to an external drive or cloud storage — Documents, Pictures, browser bookmarks, and any license keys.
  4. Restart your PC, boot into the boot menu (usually F12, F10, or Esc at startup) and select the USB drive.
  5. Follow the on-screen setup. When asked, choose “Custom install,” select your main drive, delete existing partitions, and let Windows create new ones.
  6. Complete setup, connect to Wi-Fi, and sign in with your Microsoft account.
  7. Install drivers for your GPU, chipset, and any peripherals from the manufacturer’s website.
  8. Reinstall your everyday apps and restore your backed-up files.

Building a PC from scratch

CPU first

Pick the CPU. It decides the motherboard socket and the rest of the list.

Board outside the case

Seat CPU, RAM, and the M.2 SSD on the board before it goes in the case.

First BIOS boot

Confirm RAM is seen, turn on XMP/EXPO, then install Windows.

Parts checklist, in the order to buy them:

  • CPU — pick this first, it decides everything else.
  • Motherboard — must match your CPU’s socket (e.g. AM5, LGA1700).
  • RAM — 16GB minimum for most people, 32GB for gaming/creative work.
  • GPU — sized to your resolution and budget, not the other way around.
  • Storage — an NVMe SSD for your OS and main apps.
  • PSU — never skimp here; buy 80+ Bronze or better with headroom above your GPU’s draw.
  • Case — check GPU length and radiator clearance before buying.

Assembly order:

  1. Install the CPU, RAM, and M.2 SSD onto the motherboard outside the case first — much easier to work with.
  2. Mount the motherboard standoffs, then the board itself, into the case.
  3. Install the PSU and route cables before adding the GPU.
  4. Seat the GPU in the top PCIe slot and connect its power cables.
  5. Connect front-panel headers (power switch, USB, audio) — these are the most common build-day headache.
  6. First boot: enter BIOS, confirm all RAM is detected, enable XMP/EXPO for full RAM speed, then install Windows.

Upgrades: RAM, SSD & GPU

RAM: check your motherboard’s supported speed and max capacity first. Buy RAM in a matched kit (e.g. 2x8GB) rather than mixing sticks — mismatched RAM is a common cause of instability.

SSD: confirm you have a free M.2 slot (fastest) or SATA bay. Clone your existing drive with free software before swapping, or do a fresh Windows install on the new drive.

GPU: check your case clearance, PSU wattage and connector count, and that your CPU won’t bottleneck the new card. Uninstall old GPU drivers with DDU before installing a card from a different brand.

First OBS setup (Twitch, Kick, or YouTube)

Official OBS

Install OBS Studio from obsproject.com, then run Auto-Configuration with a real upload test.

Sources in order

Game or Display Capture, then the webcam, then the mic as its own input.

Encoder and levels

NVENC if you have NVIDIA. Mic around −12 to −8 dB. Then one test stream.

Goal: one clean scene, your game, your cam, and audio that isn’t clipping.

  1. Install OBS Studio from obsproject.com, not a random “OBS Pro” site.
  2. Run Auto-Configuration. Pick your platform (Twitch / YouTube / Kick), 1080p, and your real upload speed. If you don’t know your upload, use speedtest.net on Ethernet.
  3. Add sources in this order: Game Capture (or Display Capture if the game is weird), then Video Capture Device for the webcam, then Audio Input for the mic.
  4. Crop the cam, drop it in a corner, and leave some margin so chat overlays don’t eat your face.
  5. Settings → Output: Encoder = NVIDIA NVENC if you have an NVIDIA GPU, otherwise AMD AMF or x264. Rate control CBR. Bitrate 6000 for 1080p60 on a decent connection.
  6. Audio mixer: mic around −12 to −8 dB while you talk normally. Desktop audio a little under that so you don’t drown yourself.
  7. Connect the account under Settings → Stream, then Start Streaming once. If it fails, it’s almost always the stream key or a bitrate your upload can’t hold.

Black game capture, no cam, or “encoding overloaded” is the usual wall. A live session is faster than another three YouTube videos that skip your exact GPU.

Mic and Discord audio that doesn’t suck

Windows devices

Set Windows input and output to the real mic and headset, not Stereo Mix.

Match Discord

Voice & Video must use those same two devices. Turn auto-sensitivity off.

Kill the robot

If you sound metallic, turn Krisp / noise suppression down. Match 48 kHz everywhere.

Most “they can’t hear me” is Windows picking the wrong device, not a broken mic.

  1. Right-click the speaker icon → Sound settings. Set Output to your headset or speakers, Input to the actual mic (USB mic, headset mic, or interface), not “Stereo Mix.”
  2. In Discord: User Settings → Voice & Video. Input and output should match those same devices. Turn off automatically determining input sensitivity and set a gate so keyboard clacks don’t open the mic.
  3. Turn on Krisp or Discord’s noise suppression if you’re in a loud room. If your voice sounds underwater, turn it down a notch.
  4. If you stream: in OBS, set the mic as its own Audio Input Capture. Don’t rely on “default” or Discord will steal the device mid-stream.
  5. USB mics: plug into a rear motherboard port, not a front-panel hub that drops out. Interfaces (Focusrite, Wave XLR): sample rate 48 kHz everywhere — Windows, Discord, and OBS — or you’ll get crackle.

Echo, robot voice, or “you’re blasting game audio into chat” is a routing problem. We can sit in Discord and fix the path in a few minutes.

A first-stream checklist that isn’t 40 affiliate links.

  • Account — Twitch, Kick, or YouTube, 2FA on, stream key never pasted in Discord.
  • One scene — starting soon, gameplay + cam, BRB, ending. Fancy overlays can wait.
  • Chat — open in a browser or Stream Deck. You don’t need a second PC yet.
  • VOD audio — mute copyright music on the VOD track if you play Spotify. Twitch will mute the archive.
  • Test — 3-minute unlisted / offline test. Watch it back. If your face is dark and the game is loud, fix that before you tweet the link.

Capture card (Elgato, etc.): game PC HDMI → card → stream PC. Set the card to the game’s resolution. If the preview is black, the card wants a specific HDMI handshake — we deal with that live a lot.

FPS drops, stutters, and 1% lows

Cap the frames

Cap FPS to the monitor (or a little over). Uncapped frames heat the card and hurt 1% lows.

Close the overlay pile

Game Bar, extra Discord/NVIDIA overlays, RGB suites, and 40-tab browsers.

Watch the disk

If Task Manager shows the game SSD pegged, free 20%+ before you buy a GPU.

High average FPS with stuttering is usually background junk or a drive, not “you need a new GPU.”

  1. Cap FPS to your monitor (or a little over) in-game or with NVIDIA / Adrenalin. Uncapped frames just heat the card and make 1% lows worse.
  2. Close the overlay pile: Xbox Game Bar, Discord overlay, NVIDIA overlay, RGB software, and the browser with 40 tabs. Keep one overlay if you need it.
  3. Check Task Manager while you play. If a disk is pegged, the game is streaming assets off a dying or full drive. Free 20%+ on the game SSD.
  4. GPU drivers: clean install from NVIDIA / AMD, not the generic driver Windows Update installs. DDU only if you swapped brands.
  5. Windows: Game Mode on, Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling on if it’s stable for you. Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling off if you get random crashes in a few titles.

If it only stutters in one game after a patch, that’s often shaders or that title’s CPU use. We can look at telemetry with you and say if it’s settings or hardware.

Dual monitors, printers, and a new laptop that still feels like a demo

Second monitor: Windows + P, pick Extend. Right-click desktop → Display. Drag the boxes so the mouse crosses on the real edge. Set the gaming monitor to its native refresh in Advanced display. HDMI vs DisplayPort matters for high refresh — DP if you have it.

Printer: add it from Windows Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers, using the manufacturer’s current app only if Windows can’t find it. Skip the toolbar that hijacks your browser.

New laptop: skip every extra “McAfee / Office trial / manufacturer store” prompt. Sign into Microsoft, Chrome or Firefox, and your password manager. OneDrive or iCloud only if you actually want files in the cloud. Uninstall the trial pile in Settings → Apps.

Game Pass, Steam, Epic, Discord, Spotify — we can sit through the first-hour setup so you’re not bouncing between QR codes and “verify this device” emails alone.

Common error fixes

Watchdog

DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION is usually storage driver or SSD firmware. Update those first.

No signal

Cable in the GPU ports, not the motherboard. Then reseat GPU power and RAM.

100% disk

Task Manager, then SMART. A dying drive will not be fixed by turning off Search.

No signal on boot — reseat the GPU and RAM, check the monitor cable is in the GPU (not the motherboard) port, and confirm the PSU cables are fully seated.

100% disk usage in Task Manager — often Windows Search indexing or a failing drive. Run a SMART health check on your drive before anything else.
